Sen. John Barrasso Blames Affordable Care Act for ER Crunch

Thursday, 07 May 2015 04:19 PM

Emergency rooms are more crowded than ever these days — and the blame falls on the Affordable Care Act which was supposed to ease the crush, Sen. John Barrasso tells Newsmax TV.

"A survey of over 2,000 emergency room doctors … says the volume has gone up in many places significantly," Barrasso said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"Part of it is that so many of the people on the Obama healthcare plan have been put there on Medicaid, a program we know doesn't work — [and which] many doctors don't take it at all because it pays so little.

"Even doctors that Health and Human Services says do take patients, it's about a month to get an appointment. So ERs are getting swamped … the exact opposite of what the president promised the American people."

Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican and longtime orthopedic surgeon, said as waiting times go up, the death rate also increases.

"Because people are having to wait too long for treatment of a serious issue — like a stroke or a heart attack," he said.

At the same time, Barrasso told Steve Malzberg, there are plenty of IRS agents on hand to see that Americans are signed up for the Affordable Care Act or hit those who aren't with fines.

"The president made sure we had a lot of IRS agents hired under the healthcare law to look at your taxes, but not doctors or nurses to actually treat your medical problems," he said.

"So as I've said from the beginning, coverage does not equal care … The president has always said we're going to get more people covered — the headline is 'More People Covered' — but that doesn't mean they can actually get care."

Barrasso, who chairs the Senate Republican Policy Committee, said while the Affordable Care Act itself can't be repaired, "we can fix healthcare working to give patients the care they need from a doctor they choose at lower cost."

"Look, Washington made this mess, Washington can solve it. I want to get the decisions being made at the state level where states can decide what kind of insurance people need and people can decide for themselves," he said.

"[I] want to get rid of this individual mandate that makes people buy all this expensive insurance. The president calls these things essential benefits. To me they're excessive benefits that a lot of people are ending up paying for."
