Fidel Castro Told 'Embargo' Producer He Failed to Create Utopia

By    |   Tuesday, 27 Jan 2015 10:59 AM

The producer of the upcoming documentary "Embargo," which looks at the history of the 50-year split between the United States and Cuba, said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum" that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro admitted in 2002 that he failed as a leader.

Jeri Rice recalled her trip to the island nation with a group of 40 university women, who had the opportunity to meet the country's then leader.

"He said, 'I tried to create a utopia and I failed and I don't have time to fix it and if you had come before this moment I never would've said that to you,' " Rice told host J.D. Hayworth.

"For me, he had recognized the failure, but the question is how do we then go forward?"

The encounter with Castro sparked Rice's desire to create a documentary about the embargo, which includes interviews with Robert Kennedy Jr., son of former Attorney General Robert Kennedy (who was in office during the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion), and Sergei Khrushchev, son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

"What I tried to do in this movie is I tried to get all of the enemies and have them tell the story from their personal experiences, and basically 'Embargo' fits it all together and we understand why we are where we are today and the reason why and how to move forward," said Rice.
