The Republican-controlled Congress has dragged its feet for way too long on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and must take action to fix it, conservative political strategist Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV on Monday.
"I confess I'm a little bit disappointed in the Republican Congress. I mean, this was their problem long before Donald Trump came on the scene," Lord, a former associate political director in Reagan administration, said to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"In fact, I think their problem contributed to the rise of Donald Trump. Obamacare being a perfect example. They talked about it for seven years and it got to the moment and couldn't get it together. They need to get this done.
"What I find extraordinarily interesting though in terms of Democrats, President Trump with [Sen.] Jeff Flake and others could certainly get this through, but they don't want to do it … We're here in the first place because President Obama did this by executive order instead of getting this through Congress.
Lord's comments come a day after Trump took to Twitter to proclaim that DACA was dead:
People who have benefitted from the DACA program have been allowed to stay in the U.S. despite coming here illegally as children with their parents.
The Trump administration instituted a March 5 deadline to pass legislation that would give them permanent protection from being deported.
Lord, a contributing editor to The American Spectator is the author of "What America Needs: The Case for Trump," published by Regnery.
