Jed Babbin, deputy undersecretary of Defense under former President George H.W. Bush, said Friday he thought China and Russia were "not going to help" against the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

"China is not going to help, Russia is not going to help, and I just think that's the reality," Babbin told Bill Tucker on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now." "If we're going to do something, we may have to just be able to do it ourselves, and I think that's where we are right now."

Russia's only role would be to "try to continue to thwart our interests," Babbin maintained, adding, "it's almost a national religion, for them to interfere and mess things up for us whenever and however they can."

And, it was "obvious to anyone who is willfully blind" that China either would not or could not rein in North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un, Babbin maintained.

That leaves the United States with one primary option of going to war to put an end to the threat posed by North Korea, he suggested.

"There's nothing we can do other than quite frankly go to war because there is no way that North Korea is going to be disarmed of its nuclear weapons or its missiles peacefully. It just is not going to happen," Babbin explained.

Babbin did not see it as an option to back away and recognize North Korea as a nuclear power.

"That's (former national security adviser) Susan Rice's answer. That's (former President Barack) Obama's answer, and that's what brought us to where we are now," Babbin said. "We're in a position here where we can't exercise strategic patience any longer. We're going to have to do something."

"I'm very eager for us to try to avoid the horrible way that probably will result, but we have to find some way to get Kim out of there and get his regime out of there," he added.
