Syrian Archbishop: Obama Must Stop ISIS' Slaughter of Christians

By    |   Monday, 27 Apr 2015 05:38 PM

President Barack Obama must do more to stop the slaughter of Christians by the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Middle East, Jean-Clément Jeanbart, archbishop of Aleppo, Syria, tells Newsmax TV.

"I know he was well prepared in law, and if he got back to what he has studied and the principle of the law and the right of human beings, he would intervene and say, 'Stop it, that's enough!' He can do it," Jeanbart said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"The United States is a powerful country, and it has many allies in the region who are fomenting and pushing to this war. He can ask them to stop it and to find another way.

"I'm sure the American people do not like this war. I didn't know before I came here that the American people are so good, have such concern … It gives me great comfort that really there is a nation whose citizens have good feelings and a good heart."

Jeanbart said continuing attacks against Christians by ISIS have decimated entire communities.

"It's terrible. We've lost a large number of faithful churches, institutions, schools and families. It's very sad," he said.

"We have terrorists not just [against] human beings, we have also terrorism on the liberty of talk. We cannot say everything we'd like to say. We are really targets of this fundamentalist [group].

"You say anything which doesn't please them and they are ready to kill you. We have had several bishops and priests kidnapped and a lot of people killed. You had about 22 Coptic Christians executed. Innocent people."

Jeanbart urged the United States to intervene.

"The American people and the American president can ask a few countries in the Middle East to stop funding, to stop giving arms, to stop helping ISIS and the fundamentalists and to push all parties to a reconciliation," he said.

"The American people can also help us to feed our people, to give them shelter and to rebuild their houses."
