Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich., told Newsmax on Monday that the report issued by House Republicans over the weekend blasting the Biden administration over the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 shows that Biden has “put more Americans at risk” with his policies.
House Republicans on Sunday issued a report blaming President Joe Biden’s administration for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, including testimony from multiple current and former Biden officials. House Democrats, in response, released a memorandum criticizing the GOP report and blaming former President Donald Trump, who set the date of the withdrawal before leaving office, for the chaos.
Bergman told “Wake Up America” that the report drew two main conclusions: “No.1, Joe Biden hasn’t been running the White House since the day he was inaugurated,” and “No. 2, this administration, over the last four years, has put more Americans at risk, whether it be lack of jobs, lack of healthcare, [or] unsecure borders.”
He added, “Our adversaries believe we're weak because our administration has continually shown weakness, the Afghanistan withdrawal being one of them.”
Bergman, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant general, said that when withdrawing troops there are two rules: “No. 1, you never leave your allies in a fight. And No. 2, you certainly don't leave your equipment.”
The congressman, who has represented Michigan’s 1st Congressional District since 2017, also addressed recent efforts by the Biden administration to tout job numbers, saying that voters in his state are “scared” by their economic situation.
“They’ve been nervous for the last four years,” he added, noting that after attending a recent festival parade in northern Michigan, he realized that “if the election was held tomorrow, it would be a runaway for Donald Trump.”
