Ex-Defense Spokesman: Lone Wolves Can Become Wolf Pack

By    |   Wednesday, 08 Apr 2015 03:14 PM

Former Defense Department spokesman J.D. Gordon tells Newsmax TV that the danger of attacks by "lone wolves" who support the Islamic State is a "real threat" that will always be a problem unless the United States works to change their ideology.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told "60 Minutes" on CBS on Sunday that the agency is keeping "close tabs" on about 40 Americans who have gone to the Middle East to fight with the Islamic State and have since returned, but that it's a challenge because "you can't know everything."

Gordon told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Wednesday that "it's very disturbing and it's alarming."

He explained that "a couple of months ago, al-Shabab, the Somali terror group that just carried out that attack in Kenya, they threatened Mall of America in Minnesota."

"We know that about 180 Americans have gone over to fight with the Islamic State, dozens of those are from the Somali-American community in Minnesota," he said.

"It's a real threat, and we can't be safe because it could happen anywhere," he contends.

The challenge is that "the terrorists have to be right once, and we have to be right every time."

While the presence of ISIS members could mean "another 9/11," Gordon says, "it could be more lone-wolf types of attacks, like a wolf pack."

"They may seem lone when they carry out the attack, but it's the ideology that they have this pack mentality," he explained.

"We should be ensuring that our law enforcement authorities and our intelligence authorities have all the tools they can to detect these types of plots and to break them up before they happen, but we got to get to the source," he said.

But it is key, the former Defense Department spokesman said, "to stop this ideology coming out of Saudi Arabia and Iran. Otherwise, it's going to be whack-a-mole for generations.

"We've got to pressure Saudi Arabia, Iran, and countries like that to change their blasphemy laws, change their textbooks, and have gender equality," he explained.

"We've got to fix those basic root causes of the problems. Otherwise, we're just going to continue to be attacked by these radical Islam terror groups."
