Lisa Ruth: ISIS Is Winning

By    |   Thursday, 13 Nov 2014 03:03 PM

The Islamic State (ISIS) is winning the war in the Middle East and anyone who thinks the United States and its allies are winning is "incredibly naive," former CIA analyst Lisa Ruth tells Newsmax.

"ISIS is winning and I'll tell you why — ISIS doesn't have to hold territory to win, but they are," Ruth, LIGNET analyst, told Ric Blackwell on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

"ISIS has more recruits than they can handle — there's Americans, there's Europeans, locally, they've got people pouring in, they have money, they have everything they could possibly need," he explained.

"When you look at what it means for ISIS to win, we can't right now at least eradicate them, which means that they are winning," she said.

"The United States is not winning this fight, the United States cannot win this fight with the world unless we substantially change our tactics and increase efforts against them," she added. "These pin prick airstrikes are not working."

That being said the former CIA analyst says that when it comes to winning she's "not even sure we can actually win."

"What we can do is contain ISIS, and what that will require is a much stronger attack, assault not only in Iraq but also Syria," she explained.

"We have to cut off that border in Syria," she said.

According to a report by CNN, President Barack Obama has asked his national security advisers to reconsider whether or not it's necessary to take out Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order to defeat ISIS.

This came after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel sent a memo to National Security Adviser Susan Rice in October questioning the current strategy in Syria.

"This is absolutely counterintuitive," Ruth told Newsmax.

"I have spoken with numerous intelligence colleagues over the last 24-hours who can't even believe this is something we're thinking about," she explained.

"If we get rid of Assad today in Syria, the al-Nusra front, ISIS, the real extremist groups will have the upper hand," she said.

"There's zero chance . . . that the moderates are going to be able to go in and take control," she contends.

"If Obama is seriously considering this, it just doesn't make sense, and again I've talked to people across the board — military, intelligence — I have yet to hear one person say, what a great idea!" she added. "This just doesn't make sense."
