Rep. Brady: Obama's Inaction Leaves US with 'Bad Options'

By    |   Tuesday, 16 September 2014 12:56 PM

President Barack Obama waited too long to respond to threats from the Islamic State (ISIS), handicapping the options for the United States’ response, according to Rep. Kevin Brady, a Texas Republican who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee. Brady appeared Tuesday on Newsmax TV’s “America’s Forum.”

The upcoming vote “to provide the president the ability to train those Syrian forces for the next 90 days without new dollars is the “best of a lot of bad options,” he said.

“The president waited way too long with ISIL,” said Brady, using another acronym for the Islamic State. “It's going to be difficult, it won't be easy or quick, but this immediate action is necessary.”

This will not be an “authorization of force,” he said, because that deserves a bigger debate later this year or in the new Congress.

House Republicans have drafted legislation, to be voted on this week, authorizing arming and training moderate Syrian rebels.

“If the president wants to expand his authorization of force beyond what happened in 2001 and 2002, he needs to come to Congress to explain his plan exactly the way the Constitution requires it,” he said. “In this case, there is room for that limited, direct, tailored training and we want to be able to follow what progress is being made, no blank checks into Syria.”

Obama should have addressed the threat of ISIS years ago, when it surfaced on the radar, Brady said. First he said too little and now he’s revealing too much, quashing the element of surprise, a necessary tactic to successfully defeat the enemy.

“The fact that he ignored ISIL for two years and ignored the direct threats for more than a year, now he's in a box and the U.S. is in a box,” Brady said. “I'm a little frustrated that he takes things off the table and telegraphs what we're going to do. That's not very smart to do.

"We do know ISIL has got many more resources financially, logistically and militarily than al-Qaida ever dreamed of having. There's a window of opportunity, it is closing fast and we're going to have to act in some way.”

Brady added that he’d like to see Obama address border security before it’s too late.

“Since 9/11, a country that can't secure its border, can't control its future or secure their citizens,” he said. “As a nation, we still only have control over half of our border. There is an opening that shouldn't be there. We try to shut the back door of illegal immigration so we can keep open the front door of legal immigration.

"We have no trust in the president and the White House at this point. That's one of the big hang-ups going forward.”
