Ali Safavi: Obama Ignoring Iran's 'Many Egregious Actions'

The Obama administration has such tunnel-vision on reaching a deal with Iran on its nuclear program that it's ignoring the regime's myriad 'egregious actions' within Iran and around the world, according to Ali Safavi, the U.S. spokesman for the National Council of Resistance of Iran.

During an appearance Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum," Safavi said the administration is making a big mistake in ignoring Iran's role as the "godfather" of Islamic fundamentalism.

"The administration is so much focused on striking a nuclear deal with the Iranian regime at any cost that unfortunately it is ignoring the many egregious actions of this regime both within Iran and outside the country," he said.

"The fact is that Iran is not only the number one state sponsor of terrorism, it is the number one per capita executioner of its own citizens at home," he said. "So obviously raising those issues with the mullahs in Tehran, the administration perhaps feels will adversely affect their negotiations with them over the nuclear weapons program, but you have to look at this issue sort of in a package. You cannot address the nuclear program in a piecemeal fashion. They're all parts of the same thing.

"The nuclear program of Iran, its export of terrorism, and its suppression of its citizenry. They're all part of the same game that the regime has been playing ever since it took power in Iran 36 years ago. Thinking that by being nice to the mullahs of Iran and ignoring their mischief all over the world and in the region would somehow lead to some favorable deal on the nuclear issue is at best very naïve."

Tehran is the main benefactor of the ISIS terror campaign in Syria and Iraq because it diverts attention from the Iranian regime and raises the question as to whether it would make sense to partner with the mullahs to try to defeat ISIS, according to Safavi.

There is ample evidence fingering the Iranians in violent acts of terror, including the assassinations of 450 Iranian dissidents abroad, a 1994 attack on an Argentinian Jewish community center that killed 85 people, the Khobar Tower bombing, the Beirut Marine bombing and the U.S. embassy bombing in Kuwait, yet "the Iranian regime has been let off the hook precisely because of the naïve perception that somehow if you accommodate them, if you play nice to them, that they will reciprocate," according to Safavi.

The United States and the rest of the world need to do more than "just a behind the scenes admonishment of Iran," he said.

"You need an international effort, a very clear effort, a very firm effort, to try to hold the Iranian regime to account."
