Scott Neil: US Bungled Early Successes in Iraq, Afghanistan

By    |   Monday, 02 March 2015 12:03 PM

The United States has bungled all of its successes in the Middle East following 9/11, Scott Neil, a Special Forces veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq Special Forces and the director of strategic development for the nonprofit Green Beret Foundation, told Newsmax TV.

"We had clear victory early on and … in less than 90 days we had dominated Afghanistan, kicked out the Taliban," Neil said Monday on "America’s Forum." "It was the same thing in under 90 days in Iraq.

"Then we slowly watched it grind into a halt through bureaucracies, policy failures, the inability to really understand our threat, and it's almost the same thing with the Veterans Administration. You come home from war and you just see this monster of a bureaucracy and you're told to get in line, the very back of the line."

Neil attributed the devolution of the current situation in the Middle East to a combination of failures by President Barack Obama to forge relationships with world leaders and a lack of military preparedness.

"Previous presidents really have spent the time to develop these relationships because remember, it is the people to people connection where these successes will come from," said Neil. "It's not an administration, it's not a bureaucrat to another bureaucrat from another country.

"As a president, you are the leader and as a leader it's up to you to establish these formal interpersonal relationships, always."

Additionally, the military has been slow to "adapt on understanding the human terrain and the networks and the sensitivities within that," Neil said.

"The intel community is still reporting and churning out data, but the military itself, the equipment has been abused for 13 years. We haven't really updated any of those other systems facing some of these threats, like a Russia or a China. So holistically, we're very hollow right now."
