Ira Straus: US Must Put Stop to ISIS Atrocities

Tuesday, 02 September 2014 03:58 PM EDT

The atrocities committed by the fanatics of the Islamic State (ISIS) — such as the beheading of American journalists — are not about to stop, says Ira Straus, executive director of Democracy International.

"It's not going to go away. It's going to keep getting worse until something is done to put it away," Straus said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Straus, who is also the U.S. coordinator of the Committee on Eastern Europe and Russia in NATO (CEERN) and a columnist for National Review, says the Obama administration will eventually have to admit the genuine threat that ISIS is to the world.

"The administration is committed to the wrong line … Obama has the very sad benefit of being supported mindlessly by the bulk of the mass media and he is very, very slow to recognize his mistakes," he said.

In Syria our goal has been stalemate, Straus said,  and "this goal has then been exported into Iraq by [Secretary of State John] Kerry and Mr. Obama . . . [it] is simply to contain ISIS until things dissolve domestically in our favor.

"Well, things are dissolving against our favor, not in our favor. The only good thing is we have started arming the Kurds to fight."
