A special prosecutor might eventually be needed to look into the direction of nearly $1 million from former President Barack Obama's campaign to the same law firm that funneled money for a notorious dossier on Donald Trump, Pat Buchanan said Monday.

In an interview with "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker on Newsmax TV, Buchanan, a former staffer for Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, said the revelation is going to have to be "dug up."

According to The Federalist, Obama's campaign organization directed the money to Fusion GPS, the firm behind former British spy Christopher Steele's salacious Trump dossier.

"I think you can wind up with a special prosecutor on this one," he said. "Two years and two months of Watergate — and this looks like just the beginning of such a very large thing."

Buchanan said the report appears to eclipse the alleged "Trump-Kremlin" connection, which "looks old and tired and unproven."

According to Buchanan, special prosecutor Robert Mueller's first indictment in his probe of Russia meddling in the 2016 election is "a series of white-collar crimes" that predate the election.

"They really have not hit pay dirt," he said. "It makes you wonder if there is any pay dirt in terms of collusion between Trump, his top-level campaign and the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin."

Buchanan alleged funding by the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee for opposition research that led to the Trump dossier is a "much larger potential conspiracy."

"As for Mueller, he hasn't gotten really the goods thus far, and maybe he's going to start walking up the ladder to get the higher ups by trying to split [former Trump campaign manager Paul] Manafort off," Buchanan said.
