Ros-Lehtinen: Obama Needs to Tell Americans ISIS Will Be Defeated

By    |   Tuesday, 09 September 2014 10:31 AM

When addressing the nation Wednesday night, President Barack Obama needs to show the American people, and the world, that the United States is at the ready with a plan to defeat ISIS, Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "America’s Forum."

"President Obama must present a specific plan, a decisive plan, to fight and destroy ISIL, and he must explain to the American people and to the Congress why it is in our national security interest to do so," she said. "We can't afford this large, terrorist safe haven where ISIL is attracting foreign fighters, including some from the United States and Europe."

ISIL is another acronym for ISIS, also known as the Islamic State.

The president needs to stop sending "mixed messages" that lack a clear policy or objective, she added.

"First, the president said we need to destroy the threat of ISIL to make it a manageable problem," Ros-Lehtinen said. "Then, his other top advisers, Secretary of State Kerry and Secretary of Defense Hagel, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dempsey all said that we've got to destroy ISIL completely, not just reduce it. We need to hear a uniform message from the administration, and that should be to destroy ISIL, not just to degrade it."

What she doesn’t want to see are any more characterizations of ISIS as a "manageable problem" or a "JV team."

"We've had enough of that," she said. "Are they a threat? Is it a problem? What is our national security interest? Also, we've got a lot of other threats in Syria. It's an overwhelming mess."

What needs to be discussed, and is not, is the destabilizing role Kuwait and Qatar are having in the region, Ros-Lehtinen said. She noted that Qatar is funding Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and has "actively and openly aided in raising funds for ISIL."

"This is the same country where we swapped Sgt. Bergdahl for five Taliban members that were in Gitmo. Where did we release them to? To Qatar. It's a nation that's been the home of Al Jazeera, and it's a problem. The other problem country that we consider an ally and is laughable is Kuwait. We went to war to liberate Kuwait, and they're funding ISIL, they're funding jihad, and they've become what Obama's own secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence called the epicenter of funding for terrorist groups in Syria."

While Ros-Lehtinen would like Obama to seek congressional approval before moving forward (the congresswoman believes he would get it), she’s not holding her breath.

"This president has sidestepped the Congress for so many years," she said. "Why should this one be any different?

"He really had a terrible misstep in Syria before when he said if Assad uses chemical weapons, that's a red line. Yet, he backed, probably went on vacation, and then it floundered around, and we needed up doing really nothing."
