The only known survivor of a serial killer known as the Railroad Killer said Tuesday the people who lost loved ones in Sunday's mass shooting in a Texas church have a long road ahead as they heal from their mental wounds.

Holly K. Dunn told Newsmax TV's JD Hayworth she nearly died after Angel Maturino Resendiz killed her boyfriend and then beat, raped, and stabbed her.

"I was attacked when I was 20 years old at the University of Kentucky and the Railroad Killer is who attacked my boyfriend and I," Dunn said. "He was a serial killer, he killed 13 people and is thought to have killed over 30 people."

Resendiz was put to death by lethal injection in 2006. Most of the murders he confessed to happened near train tracks.

Dunn said she suffered from survivor's guilt but that writing a new book about her ordeal, "Sole Survivor," helped her heal mentally.

"I believe that talking about it helps it lose its power. It doesn't have as much power over me as it had soon after the attack, but talking about it still to this day is hard," Dunn said. "I encourage people to talk about what has occurred because it's healing, it's healing to get it out of you to talk about it with anyone that will listen and to write about it, to talk about it."

Regarding the victims of the Texas shooting, Dunn said, "I know that all the people that are going through losing loved ones, they are going through basically a secondary victimization. They are going to suffer from post-traumatic stress themselves, being a secondary victim is real. You have healing to do too."
