Republican Rep. Jody Hice excoriated Georgia’s secretary of state for refusing to agree to conduct signature verifications on absentee ballots from the Nov. 3 general election, calling it irresponsible Tuesday on Newsmax TV.
“I cannot believe that our secretary of state is being so irresponsible with the sacredness of the voters in the state of Georgia that he is not willing to have signature verifications,” Hice said on “The Chris Salcedo Show.” “And that verification ought to go to the voter registration file with the request for an absentee ballot as well as the signature on the envelope in which that absentee ballot comes. “
The 60-year-old Republican, who in November won a fourth term to represent Georgia’s 10th Congressional District east of Atlanta to the South Carolina border, said he is trying to make as much noise as possible to pressure Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for an investigation.
Georgia Attorney Lin Wood, known for his defense of wrongfully accused Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park bomber Richard Jewell, sued Raffensperger last month for agreeing to a consent decree in March with Democratic Party officials to settle a suit by loosening signature verification procedures for the election. Wood claimed Raffensperger did not have authority to make such an agreement, that only the Georgia legislature had that power.
“There ought to be a three-way investigation and verification of every signature,” Hice said. “Look, we had 1.3 million absentee votes in Georgia this year. We have never even come close to this type of numbers and in addition to that, we sent out those invitation requests for absentee ballots, to every one on the voter registration lists, probably 5%-10% of which that list is inaccurate. So, there is between 250,000 and 500,000 people that received this and we are having no signature verification. It’s a crime to our justice as far as our elections are concerned.”
