HHS Secretary Azar to Newsmax TV: 'We Have a 6-Part Strategy' to Combat Future Outbreaks

The federal government has developed a six-part strategy to respond to any future coronavirus outbreaks, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Newsmax TV.

During an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV's Emerald Robinson that aired on Thursday's "American Agenda," Azar shared the plan.

"So, as we approach the fall, we don't know if we will have a second wave or continued outbreaks, but we are prepared for that," Azar said. "A six-part strategy is the approach we have used to prepare for any further surges or outbreaks."

Azar said the plan starts with implementing surveillance measures that would pick up on any early indicators of an outbreak.

Then, he said the U.S. deploys "historic, unprecedented testing."

"You test everybody who is symptomatic," he said, adding places with vulnerable populations, like nursing homes, should conduct asymptomatic testing.

If a positive case arises, he said contact tracers are engaged to help identify who the infected person has had contact with. Those people are then asked to self-quarantine and possibly be tested.

In addition, he said healthcare systems must be running at sufficient capacity levels with the necessary supplies.

The final parts of the plan involve coming up with therapeutic treatments and ultimately a vaccine.
