Herbert London: Jordan Should Retaliate, Not With Executions

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Feb 2015 06:01 PM

Jordan should not execute the Islamic State (ISIS) prisoners it is holding in retaliation for the terror group burning one of its pilots alive, says Dr. Herbert London, president of the London Center for Policy Research.

"That's a further act of barbarism. What you want to do is get at ISIS directly," London said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

But that task is easier said than done, according to London, who is also
a research member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and president emeritus of The Hudson Institute.

"The difficulty, of course, is that ISIS has territory, a large swath of territory in Syria and Iraq, right on the border of Jordan. So Jordan doesn't want to be enmeshed in a war," he said.

Jordan is also likely to count on support from Israel in its fight against ISIS.

"The Israelis are of course a bit reluctant to get involved in this regional war as well, so there are a lot of dominos that could fall," London said.

"Israel cannot allow Jordan to be jeopardized by ISIS. The consequence of that would be horrific for Israel and its border, so Israel would have to do something to support Jordan."

Further complicating the fight against ISIS is Turkey, London said.

"The border that Turkey has is very porous. As a consequence, there are troops and foreigners coming across the Turkish border to fight with ISIS. That is problematic," he said.

The United States is unlikely to take any new actions following ISIS' gruesome murder of the Jordanian pilot, London believes.

"What you see in the United States is a moment is what the president is calling a war fatigue. We are not doing anything about ISIS, except these pin pricks," he said.

"We have no boots on the ground beside from 1,000 advisers. If you really want to win this war, you got to put boots on the ground."
