'Arrogant and Embarrassing' — John Sununu Hammers Pence-Pounding Cast of 'Hamilton'

By    |   Monday, 21 Nov 2016 03:47 PM

John Sununu, former chief of staff to George H.W. Bush, tore into the cast of the Broadway smash "Hamilton: An American Musical" on Monday — ripping its finger-wagging lecture of Vice President-elect Mike Pence.

"Can you imagine the arrogance of people – who just happened to sing well – trying to tell a governor who's about to be vice president how to run the country? It's unbelievable," Sununu, who also served as governor of New Hampshire, told "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"From Hollywood to Broadway to TV these folks, just because they have access to the public through their entertainment talent, think they know something about done and moving on."

Sununu also praised Pence for brushing off the incident at the renowned show about Founding father Alexander Hamilton as a matter of "freedom of speech."

"It's the right way to go," Sununu told host Steve Malzberg. "Look, they're entitled to be as arrogant as they wish. Nobody has to pay attention to them. Believe it or not, most people don't."

Pence was singled out as the sold-out, Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning show written by Lin-Manuel Miranda ended Friday night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

Cast member Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, told him from the stage:

"We have a message for you, sir. We hope that you will hear us out . . . Vice-president elect Mike Pence, we welcome you, and truly thank you for joining us at 'Hamilton: The American Musical.'

"We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir.

"We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us."

Sununu is author of author of "The Quiet Man: The Indispensable Presidency of George H.W. Bush," published by Broadside Books.
