J.D. Gordon: Obama Keeps Gitmo Costly With 2,000 Staff for 122 Inmates

By    |   Thursday, 22 Jan 2015 01:11 PM

President Barack Obama's claim that the government pays $3 million per detainee in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is "the most intellectually dishonest piece of accounting you'll ever hear out of this administration," says former Defense Department spokesman J.D. Gordon.

"The reason Gitmo is so expensive and the bottom line is, because even though we only have 122 detainees there now, most of that cost comes from the 2,000-member guard force and the medical force and the legal guys providing them with care," Gordon, who is a retired Navy commander, told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

"When I was a Pentagon spokesman between 2005 and 2009, we had about 600 detainees, then down to 500 and down to 400, but the guard force and the medical force and all the lawyers were still about 2,000," he said.

"That number is the same today and that's why it's so expensive," he said. "We got 2,000 guys taking care of these detainees and there's only 122.

"President Obama is deliberately keeping that cost high," he said.

Gordon says that one of the main problems is the extraordinary treatment the detainees receive, beyond what the average prisoner is typically given.

"The Guantanamo detainees have four halal meals a day — they're much more expensive than the meals we serve to our own guards," he said.

"They have imported dates, imported honey, roasted meat and a feast for Ramadan — they're treated very well down there, and that's just the food.

"They also got the $750,000 soccer field, stationary bikes and Wii Fits, if you can believe it," he said.

In addition, "there's a medical unit that's about 100 people down there. It's a rotating unit, it leaves every year and another unit comes and take its place," Gordon said.

"There's only 122 detainees. Why do 122 detainees need a 100-person medical unit?" he asked. "That's basically like having their own personal doctor or nurse."

It's especially shameful, he contends, considering the fact that "we had veterans die in the U.S. on a secret waiting list," while waiting to see a doctor through the Veterans Affairs' medical system.

One of the reasons why Obama's outcry over Gitmo is so deceitful, he said, is because even if the prison — which, he explained, holds alleged terrorists captured on the battlefield in the course of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars — is shut down, "the taxpayers won't save any money on that" because "those 2,000 military people aren't going to be fired. They'll just be transferred somewhere else.

"That's why the president is being so dishonest, because he says it's $3 million per detainee — most of those costs are for the troops salaries and the operations to keep the troops there," he said.

"The real cost is about probably 10 percent of what President Obama is really saying," he added.

Gordon wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Times detailing Obama's proposal to shut down the prison at Gitmo and the reasons it is so expensive.
