Rep. Greg Steube to Newsmax TV: Moderate Dems Need to Step Up

Reps. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., and Greg Steube, R-Fla., condemned President Joe Biden's immigration policies and proposals Thursday on Newsmax TV, but also noted only a few moderate Democrats need to swim upstream to scuttle the Democrat plans.

Both suggested the proposal to grant amnesty to an estimated 11 million-25 million illegal immigrants could definitely pass, considering the reconciliation process Democrats have taken to possibly pass the $1.9 trillion so-called COVID-19 stimulus/relief bill.

But they also said some Democrats are wary of the open border policies, such as Del Rio, Texas, Mayor Bruno Lozano who pleaded to Biden in a YouTube video not to release detained migrants into his city.

"I think what they're going to see now is President [Donald] Trump depoliticized the immigration issue," Loudermilk told "Stinchfield." "Even Democrats . . . along the border are seeing that Trump's plans worked. The walls worked. Having people apply for asylum in Mexico, it worked. Caravans stopped.

"And just with the stroke of his pen, Joe Biden is undoing the really humanitarian policies toward illegals coming into this country that Trump and the Republicans were able to achieve. It's going away.

"Democrats, especially those along the border, saw, 'Hey, these policies did work and now they're going away all of sudden.' I think it's going to be a little different this time around with the American people."

With a 221-211 Democrat advantage in the House and a 50-50 split in the Senate, Steube said there was hope a few Democrats would be willing to oppose their leadership.

"I sure hope that there are some moderate Democrats in some of these moderate districts that are willing to stand up to [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi and the majority," Steube said. "But to this point . . . we haven't seen that.

"The only way that things like this, and horrible policies like this, get stopped is that some of these moderate Democrats in some of these moderate districts stand up and say, 'Look, I'm not going to support that, because I'm not going to take that back to my district.'"
