LIGNET's Chang: Hong Kong May See Next Tiananmen Square

The massive protests for full democracy in Hong Kong could turn into another Tiananmen Square, says lawyer Gordon Chang, a contributor to the global forecasting and intelligence website LIGNET.

"It's possible, because Chinese state media talked about Beijing sending in the people's armed police, which is essentially an arm of the military, into Hong Kong if the Hong Kong authorities could not control the situation," Chang said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"As we saw on both Saturday and Sunday and also today, the Hong Kong authorities have lost control and people in Beijing must be wondering, you know, it's time to send in the troops."

The mostly student protesters want the city's leader, Leung Chun-ying, to resign after Beijing said it would limit the 2017 elections to candidates loyal to Beijing.

In 1989, pro-Democracy protesters marched on Bejing's Tiananmen Square, prompting the government to declare martial law and resulting in the shooting of hundreds of civilians.

Chang does not think the Chinese government will back off about Hong Kong.

"They will do what is necessary to stay in power. [You've] got to remember, their reference point is 1989, where although they killed a lot of people, they did that to create a lesson on the Chinese people that the Communist Party was willing to spill blood, and they got away with it," Chang said.

On Monday, protesters braved tear gas and police nightsticks, refusing to retreat. They say China is flip-flopping on its vow to keep the city's autonomy, a promise hammered out 17 years ago when British colonial rule ended in Hong Kong.
