Gordon Chang: US Must Pressure China on N. Korea

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump is right in calling for China to put more pressure on North Korea in light of its claim to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb, Forbes.com contributor Gordon Chang tells Newsmax TV.

"In general, China needs to take a more active role in trying to control North Korea but at this particular moment the North Koreans, especially Kim Jong Un, has been pushing his state away from Beijing," Chang told "Newsmax Now" host John Bachman on Wednesday.

Kim executed his uncle at the end of 2013, severing ties between Beijing and Pyongyang.

"Trump isn't exactly right when he says that North Korea is totally under the control of China, but nonetheless is true in a broader sense that China does support the North Korean regime," Chang said. "If it really wanted to, it could actually put the screws in, but it hasn't wanted to do that."

Part of the reason is because the United States hasn't put pressure on China to put pressure on North Korea, he added.

The American response is more important than China's, Chang added, because our current policy with North Korea is "Let China do it. We'll try and work cooperatively with Beijing," Chang said.

"Well, that doesn't work," he said. "If you're going to rely on China, you've got to put pressure on China, but also we're not chopped liver. There's a lot of things that we can do with regard to North Korea directly. We haven't been doing them, and that's our fault."

Turning to the economy, Chang, author of "The Coming Collapse of China," said the American financial markets will continue to be affected by China's "for a very long time."

"People in the financial community here say, 'Well, maybe China's not growing at the 6.9 percent that Beijing claims, but it's really growing maybe 4, 5 or 6 percent,'" he said.

Chang doesn't buy that, putting the number at closer to 1 percent or 2 percent.

"The thing that people in the United States seem to forget is that Beijing has tried a lot to stimulate the economy since the end of 2014; almost everything has failed," he said. "The only thing they've been able to do is slow the pace of decent. … We are going to see a crash in China, and people here as well as people in Europe and around Asia just have yet to fully comprehend the severity of the situation."
