Sabrina Schaefer: GOP Must Keep Up Fight Against 'War on Women' Label

By    |   Thursday, 08 Jan 2015 03:58 PM

Republicans will have to work to sustain their victory over the Democrat rhetoric that insisted the GOP was waging a war on women, Sabrina Schaeffer, executive director of the Independent Women's Forum, said Thursday on Newsmax TV's "Midpoint"

"Americans said enough is enough. We are tired of being pitted against one another. People wanted substantive policy discussions, and this was the first step towards saying that we're done with this war on women rhetoric," Schaeffer said.

"Conservatives, and Republicans by extension, have done a good job this time. But, this is a fragile victory. There is still a lot of work to be done if we want to sustain this."

Schaeffer said Republicans gained ground over Democrats who had "cornered this market" and "spent more than a decade investing millions of dollars in sophisticated social science research."

She said the new Republican-majority Congress included "a whole slew of wonderful, fiscally conservative women who come from all sorts of different backgrounds and diversity, who have different professional and domestic experience."

It was not as important to "look for 50/50 as a goal post" among male and female representatives in Congress, she said, adding it was more crucial that "women voters are choosing limited government and liberty, and that they're looking for lawmakers that are going to represent them on those policies."

"What I'm mostly concerned about is that we have lawmakers, both men and women, who are going to stand for the right principles when it comes to healthcare, when it comes to energy, education, growing this economy. I'm less concerned about their gender," she said.

Republicans would need to continue to figure out how to talk to women and find "what messages work" and "what tactics work" to attract them to the party. She maintained there were many Democratic policies that worked against women, such as the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act.

"These would be debilitating to the economy. They would backfire on women. And, a strong leader is one who's going to come up with a positive alternative," she said.
