Pataki: Americans Came Together After 9/11

By    |   Monday, 11 September 2017 09:13 PM

A key lesson from 9/11 was that "politics didn't matter" after the attacks as Americans responded with "courage" and "pride" — and Washington must recapture that sense of unity, former New York Gov. George Pataki said Monday.

In an interview with "Newsman Now" host Bill Tucker and guest co-host, former Navy SEAL Jonathan Gilliam on Newsmax TV, Pataki said dividing "the American people for political advantage has got to stop."

"The thing that most struck me after 9/11 was that politics didn't matter," Pataki said. "You have this sense of pride… Americans come together and show courage in the face of this horrible terror."

"It just seems that sense of responsibility to people first doesn't exist in Washington the way it should," he added. "I hope people" in Washington "try to come together again."

"It comes down to leaders," he said. "Who's going to stand up there and talk to the American people and explain that focusing on what's right for the people matter."

Pataki said there's two elements to fighting terror in today's world.

"First, protect ourselves at home," he said, adding that the United States is "in better shape" today than 16 years ago.

Secondly, he pointed out that President Donald Trump "is doing right — we have to go after [the terrorists] where they are" and stand by our allies in the war of terror.

"Back in 9/11, we had religious fanatics," Pataki said. "I''m worried about those state sponsors" of terror, including Iran, he added.
