Bill Kristol: New Bush 41 Biography Could Hurt Jeb

"The Steve Malzberg Show"

Veteran conservative pundit Bill Kristol tells Newsmax TV the new bombshell biography of President George H.W. Bush could end up being a big distraction to his son Jeb, who is desperately trying to relaunch his faltering bid for the White House.

In John Meacham's "Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush," the elder Bush takes unexpected jabs at key figures in his son George W. Bush's administration including Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Sec. Donald Rumsfeld.

The Bush patriarch calls Cheney an "iron-ass" and Rumsfeld "an arrogant fellow," suggesting they may have hurt his son George W. Bush’s presidency.

"I'm not that surprised that the first President Bush thought that. I'm a little surprised he said it," Kristol, founder and editor of The Weekly Standard, said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"It probably doesn't really help his son's presidential campaign to have another reminder of why we do not want dynasties and why we just like to move on and not get tangled up in a fight about Cheney, Rumsfeld, and W …

"It's just awkward … I almost feel sorry for him. I mean here they are floundering at 4 percent in the polls, trying to launch a comeback for the debate on Tuesday night and we're going to have a weekend of stories about what his father thinks about his brother's administration."

Kristol said while he supports Cheney's actions as vice president, "I was not pro-Rumsfeld, I thought he mishandled Iraq, was difficult [in listening] to criticism, didn't take criticism well, didn't take it well from me.

"But they served the country and they worked for George W. and if George W. hadn't liked what they were doing he could have relieved either one – obviously he can't fire the vice president, [but] he could have failed to re-nominate him or certainly, he did curb some of Cheney's powers in the second term."

Kristol also weighed in on Sen. Marco Rubio's rising poll numbers, saying the Florida Republican has soared ahead of Jeb Bush.

"Rubio's in the 13, 12 [percent] range and Jeb is a 4. So is it really even that close anymore between Rubio and Jeb? … I really wonder if Jeb can last much longer," Kristol said.

"If Rubio can stand up to Trump, best him, or even just hold his own, because Trump's awfully good at this kind of thing … it will help Rubio a lot."
