Fran Tarkenton: Helping People Is The Mission of Business

By    |   Monday, 19 Jan 2015 03:40 PM

Former Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants quarterback Fran Tarkenton tells Newsmax TV that one of the myths of business is that the mission of business is to make money.

"The mission of business is to help people, and if your mission is to help people, you're transparent, you tell people the truth, you build relationships, and people want to interact with you and want to do business with you," Tarkenton, owner of GoSmallBiz.com, told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" Monday.

"That's a sustainable mission," he contends. "That will bring you customers and bring customers back to you because they can trust you."

He says that "if your mission is to make money, to be mega wealthy, to make billions of dollars, you will compromise your principles."

The former NFL quarterback explained that "all we have to do is look at Wall Street —  the gold standard of Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, and look how dirty they've been."

"How do people become billionaires in the marketplace?" he asked.

"They become billionaires in the marketplace because most of them cheat, and that's not a sustainable mission many get away with for a long time," he added.

Tarkenton recently wrote an opinion piece for Business Insider called the "3 Business Myths People Should Stop Believing."

Besides thinking that business is about making money, he says that the other two myths are the "use of positive thinking" and thinking that "the newest idea is the most original."

More important than starting the day with a positive attitude, the former Vikings and Giants quarterback says that its more important to make "sure you take care of every little detail" and "positivity comes from looking at all the details."

In addition, he says that it's important for business owners to understand "nobody has an original thought."

"We all learn from other people and that's what's really important, but we need to learn from the people that are doing what we're doing," he explained.

"We get smarter by listening and hearing and reading what other people are saying," he  added.
