Bill O'Reilly on Trump Firing Mueller: 'All Hell Would Break Loose'

Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax TV on Thursday that "all hell would break loose" if President Donald Trump fired Russia special counsel Robert Mueller.

"He can't fire Mueller, because that would be impeachment," O'Reilly told "Newsmax Now" host John Bachman in an interview. "The rest of his term would be taken up with this crazy stuff.

"Donald Trump has to learn from history," he continued. "When Richard Nixon started firing special counsels, that was the end.

"When Bill Clinton started attacking Ken Starr, he got impeached," O'Reilly said.

In the "Saturday Night Massacre" on Oct. 20, 1973, Nixon fired Watergate independent prosecutor Archibald Cox — prompting the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and No. 2 William Ruckelshaus.

A federal judge later ruled Cox's firing was illegal, and a new special counsel, Leon Jaworski, was appointed.

Nixon resigned in August 1974 rather than face impeachment proceedings by the House.

Clinton was impeached by the House in 1998 over the Paula Jones sexual-harassment scandal, but was acquitted of all charges by the Senate.

O'Reilly told Bachman, however, that President Trump could fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — who appointed Mueller — if a report by the Justice Department's Inspector General shows abuses by the agency and the FBI in the Hillary Clinton email and Russia investigations.

"If the Inspector General's report comes out and says that the FBI botched both investigations — or even one — there'd be some justification for him to remove Rosenstein," he said.

"That could happen, but it would have to be based on something that the Justice Department puts out.

"But Mueller, all hell would break loose if that ever happens."

Turning to the resignation of House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday, O'Reilly said the Wisconsin Republican "will pack earlier than November."

"You'll probably see him get out of there in May."
