Morris: Obama Needs to Release Benghazi Daily Intelligence Briefings

By    |   Thursday, 08 May 2014 03:42 PM EDT

President Barack Obama needs to release his daily intelligence briefings surrounding the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, to solve the problem of where the talking points following the attack came from, veteran political consultant and Newsmax contributor Dick Morris says.

"There's only one way to resolve this and that is Barack Obama should follow the lead of George W. Bush in releasing his daily intelligence briefing for the days after Benghazi," Morris told J.D. Hayworth and John Bachman on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"He has said in public that everything he said about the movie was based on an intelligence assessment, the CIA now says it was not, and there's no other agency that has stepped forward to saying it was," Morris explained.

"I believe that he never got it, I believe [then-Secretary of State] Hillary [Clinton] never got it, they cooked it up," he alleges.

"What probably happened was at 10 p.m. the day of the attack, Hillary and Obama spoke by phone and in that phone conversation, God knows what was said, but right after that Hillary came out and blamed the movie," Morris said. "All we know is that what Hillary said 36 hours earlier is what Rhodes told Rice to say 36 hours later. Rhodes is White House, Hillary was State."

Morris wrote an opinion piece with his wife, Eileen McGann, Thursday claiming that those examining the talking points used in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack by former UN Ambassador Susan Rice are looking in the wrong place.

He says that the problem with the investigation into the attack is that "the Republican Party has been chasing a red herring in Congress" by focusing on the talking points from the CIA.

But emails released as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the legal group Judicial Watch found that the talking points were crafted in the White House, specifically by Obama's Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes, in which he told Rice to keep the focus on a YouTube video.

"Well, it turns out that there were now two sets of talking points — the one we've been chasing, which was the official one, and then a secret, more explosive, more extensive one that was not unearthed until Judicial Watch got a hold of that smoking gun memo, but when you look at who the memo was from and who it was to and who wrote it, you understand what was happening," Morris explained.

"The CIA was talking about the demonstration and trying to parse the blame favorably to the administration but still parsed, but in the meantime, Rhodes in the White House was hell bent on a set of talking points that had no basis in reality, in total fiction."
