President Barack Obama's remarks about the racial chaos in Ferguson, Missouri, helped calm the explosive situation, according to Ed Morrissey, a senior editor at Hotair.com and columnist for The Week.

"He had a pretty measured response ... He tried to put this one down the middle, and he largely succeeded,'' Morrissey said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

On Thursday, the president said there is "no excuse" for violence against either the police or those protesting the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager.

"I know that many Americans have been deeply disturbed by the images that we’ve seen in the heartland of our country," Obama said.

Morrissey said, "He put out a message that was designed to calm everybody down a bit and fortunately that’s been the case.

"There’s still plenty that we have to learn about what happened in Ferguson though, so [we need] open minds.''
