Ed Klein: No One Can Rein in Trump, Including Kelly

Gen. John Kelly will crack the whip and bring discipline to the White House in his new role as President Donald Trump's chief of staff — but don't expect him to be able to rein his boss in, veteran political journalist and bestselling author Edward Klein told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"No one, including Donald Trump's father, Fred Trump, has ever been able to rein in Donald Trump. I've known Donald Trump for 35 years and he's never been different than he is today," Klein said to Miranda Khan on Newsmax's "America Talks Live."

"Even if Gen. Kelly can rein in Ivanka [Trump] and Jared [Kushner] and [Steve] Bannon and the entire White House staff, he's not going to be able to rein in Donald Trump, who believes by being unpresidential is how he became president.

"So what you're going to see is a president who continues as he has in the past to be unconventional, but the White House staff is going to be very disciplined, which should be very interesting to see how this works out."

Kelly replaced Reince Priebus as chief of staff following a tumultuous week during which Priebus was ousted, and Anthony "The Mooch" Scaramucci was appointed communications chief, only to be fired.

Klein said Scaramucci — who got the ax after his profanity-filled rant against Priebus and Bannon in an interview with the New Yorker — was "sort of a metaphor about everything that was going wrong in the White House.

"He was amateur who had no political experience and this has been a White House filled with people who have had no previous experience. He was so arrogant that he didn't know what he didn't know, which is always a terrible thing. And finally he reinforced Donald Trump's worst instincts.

"Now, compare him, say, with Kellyanne Conway who is in the running for that job. When she goes on television, you don't hear her trying to make herself more important. She always talks about how great Donald Trump is and I think that's a key to that job."

Klein said there is only one "star" in the White House — Trump himself — which should be a "warning" to Kelly.

"Now if Gen. Kelly starts getting great press, which he already started getting, and he suddenly emerges as the star in the White House, I'm not so sure Donald Trump is going to like that," Klein told Khan.

Klein said Trump liked Scaramucci at first because of his "blatant attacks and kind of macho attitude."

"But when he realized that this was something that was not going down well not only with his base — especially because of that profanity — but also with the Republican Party, I think he then stepped away from Scaramucci," he said.

"I think it was a brilliant move on the part of Gen. Kelly to say the first thing I'm going to do is get rid of the Mooch and I think it was a wise thing."

Klein is author of "Guilty as Sin: Uncovering New Evidence of Corruption and How Hillary Clinton and the Democrats Derailed the FBI Investigation," published by Regnery.
