DeLay: Trump Not Losing His Voters, But Needs More to Win

Donald Trump supporters are "disheartened" by a cascade of damaging stories about the GOP nominee, but "they're going to vote for him" because Hillary Clinton "is worse," according to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Trump has "got to go straight to the American people," DeLay, author of "Revival! Revolution! Rebirth!" told host Steve Malzberg in an interview Thursday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"He's going to have to buy time to tell his story and explain himself to the American people – and frankly he needs to be more contrite," DeLay said. "And secondly he needs to shut up. Quit attacking other Republicans."

DeLay said stories about a 2005 hot-mic video of Trump using sexual aggressive language about his attitude toward women, and accusations of sexual improprieties in the past by the reality television star and real estate mogul are "pouring a lot of cold water on a lot of people."

Trump has apologized for the 2005 remarks, calling them "locker room" talk, and denied the allegations from women who claim he has groped or kissed them without their consent.

"People are just disheartened, absolutely disheartened," he said. "However, they're not supporting Trump, but they're going to vote for him – because Hillary is so bad. She is worse than Trump . . ."

But "we have our work cut out for us," he said of supporters of the GOP nominee.

"I think there's still an opportunity for Trump to win," he said. "I think Hillary is so bad and so flawed that most of Americans don't want to see her as president of the United States for the next four years. And he's still getting good crowds."

"But I've got to tell you, we're on the margin now, and he's hit this 40 percent ceiling, and he's got to be reaching out to other people in order to get the electoral votes that he needs," DeLay added. "So he's got to be on his best game . . ."

"He's got to be focused on Hillary Clinton, her flaws, and he needs to spend a lot of money telling his story to the American people," DeLay insisted.
