Donald Trump is emerging as the anti-Hillary Clinton because the billionaire developer is more likable and candid than the former secretary of state, says Ronald Kessler, best-selling author of "The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents."

"People do sense people's character. Trump is the opposite of Hillary Clinton, who treats her Secret Service agents with contempt. She's so abusive and nasty that being assigned to her detail is considered a form of punishment," Kessler said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[People] get a sense from her that she's not a very nice person. Donald is the opposite. People get that he really is likable just like Barack Obama, [who] regardless of how you feel about his policies, people like him.

"The same with Donald. He's candid, he admits that he exaggerates and all of that is so important in today's television world."

Kessler said those who argue that Trump, the front-runner among Republican candidates, has yet to formulate specific policies should remember President Barack Obama hadn't done so either before winning the White House in 2008.

As the nation's 45th commander in chief, Trump would be highly respected by world powers, Kessler told Steve Malzberg.

"People understand that other countries are not going to mess with Donald, as opposed to Obama, who says he doesn't want war," he said.

"The same with the economics side. There will be a psychological effect if Donald became president on businesses.

"They would understand that they're not going to be demonized, that they're not going to be overregulated and they will therefore feel more confident about expanding."

Kessler said that "over time," Americans will see a softer side of Trump.

"People just focus on how the guy comes across on TV. He's the master. At the same time, he has a great track record," Kessler said.

Kessler's other books include "The Secrets of the FBI," published by Crown Forum, and "Inside the White House: The Hidden Lives of the Modern Presidents and the Secrets of the World's Most Powerful Institution," published by Simon & Schuster.
