Rumsfeld: Obama Not Standing Strong in Terrorism Battle

By    |   Thursday, 19 Feb 2015 05:14 PM

President Barack Obama has weakened America’s ability to fight terrorism — and appears to want to pass the nation’s power onto another country, Donald Rumsfeld, former secretary of defense for Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, told "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"There's a great many things that have been done that weaken our ability to do what needs to be done," Rumsfeld said Thursday on Newsmax TV.

"If you don't properly identify the enemy and, in this case, it's obviously Islamists and radicals, the Muslim faith, who are determined to attack the very fundamental thing that stabilizes the world, namely the nation-state.

"They want to end the nation-state concept and impose a caliphate. And to pretend that it's random … is to deny the truth."

On Wednesday, Obama said he wouldn’t classify the Islamic State (ISIS) and al-Qaida as terrorists powered by "radical Islam" — because it gives them a religious legitimacy. "We are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam," the president said.

Until the enemy is officially identified, Rumsfeld said, protecting and preserving the American way of life will be difficult.

Rumsfeld — author of "Rumsfeld's Rules: Leadership Lessons in Business, Politics, War, and Life," published by Broadside Books — said he was disappointed in Obama’s lack of leadership skills.

"It's a stunning lack of leadership that is going to cost America greatly in time, in dollars, and — I hope not — in blood," Rumsfeld said.

"It is a signal being set out across the globe that the United States has stepped back and is anxious to have someone else provide the kind of standards and leadership and examples that we feel will make for a better world.

"I mean who do they expect to do that? The European Union's not doing it. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is filling a vacuum and stepping into Ukraine and one has to wonder what's next."

Rumsfeld said Obama has been in a "state of denial" about "people who are determined to promote their ideology — and they're Muslim."

"They're not a majority of the Muslims, but they're a nontrivial fraction that are engaging in these God-awful acts and to pretend that's not the case is utter nonsense," he said.

"We aren't against a religion as a country, we're against terror and we're against Islamists who are using their religion and perverting their religion to attract people and money and go out and kill innocent people in an attempt to impose their radical views on the world

"The idea that you deny the very reality of what we're dealing with, it's been taken to a level that I never imagined anyone would with respect to this administration."

Rumsfeld said while no country is perfect, Obama "apparently believes or acts like he believes, at any rate, that there are others in the world who would provide better leadership than our country.

"I don't quite understand why he thinks that is because what happens when the president steps back and what happens when the president creates that vacuum.

"Nature abhors a vacuum and it gets filled by people who don't believe what we believe and are trying to move the country in a direction that is going to be damaging, not just to us but to people who value freedom and recognize the role of women in the world."
