Dick Morris on Michael Bloomberg: 'He's Basically a Democrat'

By    |   Thursday, 11 February 2016 08:15 PM

The decision by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on entering the 2012 presidential sweepstakes as an independent depends more on who wins the Democratic nomination and not the Republican one, political strategist Dick Morris told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"If Hillary [Clinton] wins the nomination, regardless of who the Republican is, I don't think Bloomberg is going to run," Morris said on "Dennis Michael Lynch: Unfiltered" in an interview. "If [Bernie] Sanders wins the nomination, then I think we can expect Bloomberg to come in and sort of be the moderate Democratic candidate."

As such, Bloomberg's goal would be to keep Republicans out away from the presidency — regardless, Morris said.

"He's basically a Democrat and would want to keep the Republicans in general and [Donald] Trump in particular out of the White House," he told Lynch. "If [Ted] Cruz were the nominee or [Marco] Rubio, he still might run — because he's basically a Democrat.

"The irony of this candidacy is that, while it may be triggered by Sanders winning the Democratic nomination, the effect of his candidacy would be to take more votes away from the Republicans than the Democrats."
