Sen. Durbin: Sending Land Troops to Fight ISIS 'Serious Mistake'

By    |   Sunday, 16 Nov 2014 11:52 AM

Committing land troops to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria would be a "serious mistake," Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin said Sunday, even in the wake of the apparent beheading of American aid worker and former soldier Peter Kassig.

"There are many who are anxious to send troops forward," Durbin told CNN "State of the Union" host Candy Crowley. "I am not one of them."

Durbin said that instead of sending in troops, he believes President Barack Obama's strategy of employing a coalition of support for home-grown troops from Syria and Iraq is still the way to handle ISIS.

He emphasized that he, like many other officials and the American people, feel that it would be "a serious mistake for us to make a commitment of land troops into these theaters. We have to think long and hard about the best way to defeat this terrible terrorist group."

To do that, Durbin said, "we need to provide support to those that are fighting ISIS and we can provide that support, logistically, training, intelligence, air cover."

The mission is working, said Durbin, "but the notion of sending in rotational troops as we saw in Iraq in the past, and in Afghanistan, I think we've learned our lesson."

Meanwhile, Crowley pointed out that the president's deadline on authorizing forces in the Middle East, as outlined in the nation's War Powers Act, has come and gone, and Durbin said Democrats are working on that issue.

"Last week the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, at least the Democratic Caucus, sat down with Sen. [Robert] Menendez, [D-N.J.] and spelled out an approach to this, an authorization for the use of military force that is more explicit and timely considering the threat that we face," said Durbin. "I would like to see us move on it now, before the new Congress comes in. We should have a bipartisan agreement giving the president express authority using our constitutional responsibility, putting a time frame and some limitations on what we are doing in the Middle East."
