Wash. Examiner's Drucker: GOP Benefits if Rebel Flag Taken Down

By    |   Monday, 22 Jun 2015 06:45 PM

With South Carolina an early primary state, the Republican Party would benefit from the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the Capitol grounds, David Drucker, senior congressional correspondent for the Washington Examiner, told Newsmax TV.

South Carolina Republicans are mixed on the flag, Drucker said Monday on "The Hard Line," and candidates need all of their votes. If the flag can be removed before the primary, it will cause them less trouble.

It also would be good for the Republican candidates if they would be more definitive and call for the flag to be taken down, Drucker said. There are opinions ranging from it being a symbol of Southern heritage to it representing racism, he noted, but added, "That flag symbolizes the Confederacy that seceded and wanted to keep blacks enslaved, and you just can't get around that."

Newsmax contributor and National Review columnist John Fund said he doesn't see the flag as explicitly racist, but said that since the flag was placed on the Capitol grounds by the Legislature, which was all-white at the time, it should now be taken down by the same body, which now is more diverse.

Gov. Nikki Haley held a press conference Monday asking the Legislature to do just that.

Fund and Drucker also discussed the Democratic Party's leftward shift, pulling presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton in that direction as well.

Democrats formerly would back a Democratic president on trade issues related to foreign policy concerns, but no longer, Fund said.

"We're going to see perhaps the starkest difference between the two parties we have ever seen in modern history simply because the Republican Party is not firmly conservative, the Democratic Party is really moving left," he said.

Drucker said Republicans can take advantage of the move, but will have to time it right.

If Republicans win the White House and keep both houses of Congress, Democrats will begin infighting like Republicans did in 2008, he said.

"You're just going to see a ton of infighting as a bunch of powerless Democrats have nothing to lose, but to turn on each other and try and fight for the heart and soul of their party," he said.
