David Dreier to Newsmax TV: Time to Support Proposed Fallen Journalists Memorial

By    |   Wednesday, 24 July 2019 09:03 AM

David Dreier, chairman of Tribune Publishing, urged Americans to get behind a proposed memorial honoring fallen journalists during an interview on Newsmax TV.

His comments came while appearing on Tuesday’s “Newsmax Now.”

Dreier, who is chairman of the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation and a former member of Congress, recalled the shooting at the Capital Gazette last year which left five people dead and the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

“And we know that journalists are under attack all across the globe,” he said. “

He said America needs to memorialize those who have paid “the ultimate price in trying to bring us the truth.”

“…it’s going to be a long challenge to build a memorial on or near the mall in Washington. But what people need to do is go to fallenjournalists.org and get in touch with my former colleagues in the House and Senate and urge them to co-sponsor this legislation.

He said no tax dollars will be used in the project.

“All of this will be done by voluntary contributions, no taxpayer dollars involved,” he said.  “What we’re doing is encouraging people to go to fallenjournalists.org and make a contribution there or offer ideas.

Dreier said he also has been encouraged by the positive reaction he has received from the White House.

“I’ve not talked personally to the president about this, he said. “But there is a level of enthusiasm of what we’re trying to do here.”

And he added: “I don’t believe journalists are the enemies of the people. I believe they’re the keepers of democracy.”
