Daniel Hannan: US Alienating Nations Around World

Monday, 17 Nov 2014 02:52 PM

The United States has alienated nations around the world during President Barack Obama's reign, says Daniel Hannan, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party and the European Parliament

"The last six years have been the worst time to be a traditional friend of the U.S. Look at the countries, which one way or the other, have been let down, like Poland and the Czech Republic. They took a huge hit by agreeing to install the missile defense field," Hannan said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"That was a really big ask for a government to say to a socialist 'We may even make ourselves a target by agreeing to host this thing, but you know what, we owe it to the Americans. They supported us in the Cold War and they helped the British from communism.'

"And then to be told when you've taken that edge by the Obama administration 'You know what guys, thanks, but we're not going to do that.' That was a big blow."

Hannan said that Israel, India, and the United Kingdom have also discovered the U.S. has not been "particularly friendly."

"It's been a very radical departure in foreign policy terms from the U.S. that used to know where its allies were around the planet," said Hannan, author of "How We Invented Freedom and Why It Matters," published by Head of Zeus.

Still, some Europeans — and the European media — are mourning over the defeat of Obama's agenda in the GOP-led midterm elections earlier this month, according to Hannan.

"What they see [in Obama] and this is the elites, but this is also the extended media, is the great state visit, which he does really well," he said.

"I got to give him that. He's a great speech maker as long as he has his prompter. Michelle [Obama] is great. She does this nice line in talking to underprivileged kids.

"You can understand why, in Obama's point of view, they get back into Air Force One, cheers are still ringing in their ears. The media have all been fantastically friendly in a way he doesn't get very often at home."

But once Obama touches down in the U.S., it's another story, Hannan said.

"You can understand why he's a bit impatient with these dumb-head Republicans who keep on insisting on standing by the letter of the constitution instead of just giving him his way," he said.

"It's something that happens to all leaders after a while, which is why your founders fought to try and cut off the time that somebody could do the job for."

Earlier this month, Hannan resigned from his post as the Tory spokesman on legal affairs in the European Parliament.
