Rep. Meuser to Newsmax: New Bill Takes Aim at 'Ideological Prosecutors'

By    |   Friday, 26 January 2024 10:58 AM EST

Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., on Newsmax Friday blasted "ideological prosecutors" whom he blames for rising crime in the nation's cities and intends to "flip it" with new legislation.

In an interview on "Wake Up America," Meuser said his new bill — the Holding Prosecutors Accountable Act — will "flip" the rising numbers of violence, drug-related crimes, and burglaries plaguing many big cities.

"We have liberalism ideology," Meuser said. "The federal prosecutors that are getting appointed are very, very liberal. I mean, their ideology is that the criminals are the victims, so let's flip it. There's so many things that they're doing that are, frankly, upside down and backwards. The other piece is the defunding and the other part is people like George Soros, who thinks … it's a wonderful idea to pay for the campaigns — millions of dollars like in Philadelphia, for instance, … that pay for their campaigns and put them in office, and why they would want to do that is pretty bizarre."

Specifically, the legislation would make prosecutors' offices that fail to prosecute at least 67% of arrests for violent crimes ineligible for Department of Justice Byrne Grants, which he called the leading source of federal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions.

"The other thing that's consistent is prosecutors in all of these cities … they're prosecuting approximately 30% to 35% of the arrests," he said. "Some cities less — we believe 27% to 25%. Now on the flip side, a city like San Diego, which is about the same size as Philadelphia — a little bit smaller — has a prosecution rate of 67-68% And guess what? The crime in San Diego is 1/10th that of Philadelphia and [Washington] D.C. on a proportional basis."

Meuser also took aim at the crisis on the southern border — and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

"There's a reason that this polls as the number one concern of America as it should be," he said of an unprecedented numbers of migrants crossing the southern border illegally.

"The border is an unmitigated disaster … the administration is just doing an awful job."
