President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is an effort to fix a broken system, former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "Newsmax Now," Gilmore and host Bill Tucker spoke about the future of DACA, which is slated to be phased out in March.

"Well I think what [Trump is] doing is cleaning up an old mess," said Gilmore, a Republican who served from 1998-2002. "The problem is that the so-called Dreamers are here illegally, and you know President Obama didn't do them any favors by keeping their status illegal and just letting them go on and start their lives and do all that kind of thing when he had a deferred deportation program."

Gilmore echoed others by saying it is now up to Congress to write and pass legislation that would serve as a permanent solution to the issue. Roughly 800,000 people have benefitted from DACA, which allows people who illegally came to the United States as children with their parents to stay here under certain conditions.

"I think we've got to get the law straight, and that, I think, is really what's bothering people, and it's something that we've got to do," Gilmore said. "You can define the Dreamers any way you want to by statute, but you can't just have an illegal situation."
