Tom DeLay: America Needs One-and-Done DACA Program

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says Congress needs to pass a one-and-done DACA program.

"If they're going to do a DACA program, then they need a DACA program that says very strongly in the bill: This is the one and only time we're going to do this, and we're not going to do it anymore," DeLay told Newsmax TV hosts Bill Tiucker and Nan Hayworth on Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

"And send that message to those that think if they can just get your child across the border then you'll have a special status, and then you will be a special status, so you're using your child as a way into the United States. That kind of message needs to be sent that we're going to take it seriously, we're going to deal with those that are already here, but no longer. This is going to end."

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, allowed people who illegally came to the United States as children with their parents to stay if they met certain criteria. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in early September announced President Donald Trump was ending DACA and giving a gridlocked Congress until March 2018 to decide what happens to the 800,000-plus young people affected.

Trump earlier in the day called on lawmakers to find a bipartisan solution to protect DACA recipients from deportation, but he repeated his demand any agreement must include funding for a border wall with Mexico.

He also suggested an immigration deal could be reached in two phases — first by addressing "Dreamers" and border security with what he called a "bill of love," then by making comprehensive changes that have long eluded Congress.

DeLay says he hopes that does not mean "we're going to give special status to those that are here and that are illegal."
