"This isn't getting a speeding ticket or not paying for a cup of coffee. This is violent criminal activity."
The 36,000 criminals were responsible for "about 88,000 to 90,000 crimes" in the U.S., Farrell said, adding Judicial Watch had filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security for records about the policy.
Judicial Watch was also suing DHS for information about Islamic militant Anwar al-Awlaki, amid reports that indicated he at one time "was working for the United States in some capacity." Al-Awlaki was killed by a U.S. drone strike in 2011.
"They refer to al-Awlaki as an asset, where they make reference to asset reporting using his name. And, then it looks like about 10 days before he re-entered the country, they were looking to indict him. So, there's lots of activity, there's lots of maneuvering on the part of the FBI. And, we also believe that there's significant CIA interest in al-Awlaki," he said.
