Craig Shirley: Trump Has 'Hidden Strength' From Reagan Democrats

By    |   Monday, 04 Apr 2016 08:35 PM

Donald Trump has "hidden strength" in his support — from crossover Reagan Democrats to voters angry at the status quo — and can't be counted out even in tight primary contests like Wisconsin, presidential historian Craig Shirley tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview Monday with "Newsmax Prime" hosts J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan, the author of "The Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan" says the "enormous transition" of the national GOP is helping fuel the real estate billionaire's candidacy.

"How many times have we pronounced Donald Trump dead? He's been pronounced dead more times than Dracula," Shirley said. "I'm convinced that he has reverse polarity and that whatever he does it simply enhances his position in the polls. … I'm not sure anybody knows why."

Shirley argues the GOP nationally is "in the wilderness right now."

"And the answer for a lot of people is Donald Trump simply because he is the most anti-establishment, most anti-Washington, the most anti-political elites of all the candidates," Shirley said.

Shirley also sees "hidden strength in the polling" that's missed by pollsters and political observers.

"People may disapprove of Donald Trump, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to vote against him," Shirley said. "I expect [Sen. Ted] Cruz to win but I wouldn't be surprised if Trump did."

Shirley said Trump needs to stick to the issues that catapulted him to the top of the polls — national security and immigration — and could tap into crossover voting by Reagan Democrats.

"Ronald Reagan won the 1980 nomination, including the Wisconsin primary, for many reasons, including the crossover Democrats who are able to cross over and vote in Republican primaries," Shirley said. "That factor cannot be underestimated."
