Craig Shirley: Populist Forces Fueling Angst Against GOP

By    |   Tuesday, 08 Mar 2016 10:17 PM

The race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination is far different from races in 1964 — or even in 1976 or 1980 — because "it's not simply the establishment versus the anti-establishment," Ronald Reagan historian Craig Shirley told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"This is a little bit more complicated," he told host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV "America Votes: 2016" in an interview. "It's the establishment versus the anti-establishment versus the populist forces at work in the party right now.

"American populism overlays much of American conservatism but not entirely," he said. "So, there's a schism there somewhat between the people who are advocating populist impulses and advocating traditional American impulses."
