Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., in an interview with Newsmax, accused Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee of putting on a "show" when they questioned the need to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of every meeting of the panel.
Cline made his remarks Thursday on "National Report."
"You know we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States every day on the floor of the House of Representatives and [Florida Republican] Matt Gaetz and all of us thought it would be a great idea to go ahead and say the pledge before each meeting of the Judiciary Committee," he said.
"But Democrats showed their true colors by objecting to it," Cline added. "Some saying they already did it once a day. They don't need to do it twice a day. Some throwing up unrelated amendments. It was a show on the part of the Democrats because in the end they all voted for it anyway."
And he noted the actual hearing accomplished a lot, despite the early flap.
"It was a productive hearing," he said. "Jim Jordan is leading the charge in Judiciary to address the border crisis. And I'm proud to be on the Judiciary with him to help him do that.
"You know this was an opening hearing. The very first of the new Republican majority to explore what the state of the crisis is at the border right now.
"We heard from a father whose son died of fentanyl poisoning that was trafficked across the border. We heard from a sheriff who says the border is not secure even though the vice president says it is.
"So we have a lot to tackle, but we're ready for the challenge."
