Reform Activist: Gay Hiring Demands Threaten Christian Schools

By    |   Friday, 25 July 2014 03:36 PM EDT

A Christian school's objection to hiring gays and lesbians could affect its accreditation — and that's unfair to the nation's education system, says Joy Pullman, managing editor of The Federalist and School Reform News.

"The thing that sticks here is whether people are allowed to really educate children according to the values that they hold dear and the culture that matters to them,'' Pullman told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Or is the federal government going to basically enforce an anti-religion religion on everybody.''

The New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, which provides accreditation, is reviewing whether its standards are being violated by Gordon College after the school opposed hiring protections for gays and lesbians.

If Gordon, which is located in Wenham and specializes in liberal arts, were to lose its accreditation, the U.S. Education Department would likely yank federal financial aid.

The review comes after Gordon president D. Michael Lindsay and other religious leaders wrote the White House to request an exemption to a new executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating in hiring based on sexual orientation.'

Pullman, who is also an education research fellow at The Heartland Institute, believes college education is more than just classes and books.

"We're not only teaching them how to write an essay, but we are also teaching them about what it means to be a human being so that is really close to a religious belief,'' she said.

"Your worldview about the world, about what human beings are for, and so forth. What you think of humans and what you think of sexual relationships really is an important part of educating children.''
