ReaganBaby.com Founder: More Gun Laws Won't Help Chicago

By    |   Tuesday, 07 July 2015 04:34 PM

More gun safety laws won't stop the violence in Chicago, ReaganBaby.com founder Megan Barth tells Newsmax TV.

"Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, and the violence continues to escalate," Barth told Miranda Khan and Ric Blackwell on "Newsmax Now" on Tuesday.

"More gun safety laws are not going to address the core of the problem, and the core of the problem is a culture that pervades specifically communities of poverty, which are high in the African-American community in Chicago," she explained.

Barth says that part of the problem is that so many African-American homes are without fathers.

"You have a culture of young kids growing up in fatherless homes looking for male role models or counterparts and they find them in gangs," she said.

There were 55 people shot and 10 killed over the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, including 7-year-old Amari Brown. The bullet was intended for his father, who is a gang member. None of the shootings involved police.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy put the blame for the violence on too many guns.

"The father of this child, Amari, that was killed, had 45 arrests. If he was in jail, he wouldn't have been the target and his son could have been saved," Barth contends. "What we need here is to not just look at a Band-Aid for the problem by introducing more gun laws."

Stephen Cobb, former general counsel of the Democratic Party of Virginia, joined Barth on Newsmax TV and said that "gun control is something that's going to be and should be at the forefront of the public policy debate in Chicago."

However, Cobb also said that more gun control "is only one part" of what's needed "to combat gang violence and gun violence. Not just in the city of Chicago, but across the country."
