True the Vote's Engelbrecht: DOJ's IRS Probe 'Just a Ruse'

By    |   Thursday, 17 July 2014 05:03 PM EDT

As long as the investigation into the IRS scandal is led by someone with ties to the "untrustworthy" Obama administration, it’s likely "just a ruse," True the Vote’s Catherine Engelbrecht tells Newsmax TV.

"I want to say that now that there's an investigation, and things seem to be potentially progressing, that we might soon learn what, when, and who gave the marching orders, but the other side of me says that this could be a play to put something into a criminal investigation and lock the whole thing down where we can't see anything," she said on "America’s Forum."

"Criminal investigations by their nature secure evidence and documents and obscure them from public view. Could that be where this is headed? I don't know, but if history has anything to tell us from this, it's that we're not going to be given a straight answer, so it remains to be seen."

She said the Obama White House has a pattern and practice of "attempts to put these things under wraps and to bob and weave past questions."

She doesn’t anticipate the Justice Department’s investigation into Lois Lerner and the actions of the IRS to deviate from that course.

"I don't see it going any differently," she said. "We're going to stay in the fight to be sure and take every angle, every opportunity we can to push for the truth, but it's an uphill battle with this administration."

In a later interview on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show,'' Engelbrecht speculated that a criminal probe may have been ordered to halt the flow of information about the scandal from leaking.

"My general understanding is when you open a criminal investigation, all evidence becomes part of that investigation, and an iron curtain goes down where you can't see anything else,'' she said.

"So the retrieval of emails, the answering of how many witnesses, anything is now going to be no comment, under investigation. And I just have to wonder if that's not the play.''

TruetheVote.org is "a nonpartisan, voters’ rights and election integrity organization" that, on behalf of some 22 plaintiffs, has sued the Mississippi Republican Party and a host of others in connection with the Republican primary for U.S. Senate that pitted six-term incumbent Thad Cochran against tea party candidate Chris McDaniel. The plaintiffs are seeking the release of public documents in order to determine election integrity, according to Engelbrecht.
