Chris Wallace to Faltering Carson: Should Voters Go With 'Second Opinion'?

Chris Wallace to Faltering Carson: Should Voters Go With 'Second Opinion'?

By    |   Sunday, 06 December 2015 11:33 PM EST

"Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace on Sunday asked Dr. Ben Carson whether Republican voters should begin considering a second choice for president now that his poll numbers have begun to slide.

"I have great respect for you," Wallace told the retired neurosurgeon, "but I've always been told a good doctor is never threatened if you ask for a second opinion. He welcomes that because he wants to do the best for the patient."

Wallace noted that Carson's poll numbers have slipped significantly from his time tied with Donald Trump for the top position. The change came after the Nov. 13 Paris terror attacks when Carson appeared on less solid footing on national security.

"Is it possible that with the changed focus of this campaign, with the attacks in Paris and now in San Bernardino and the increased emphasis on foreign policy experience and being commander in chief, that maybe you're not the right fit at this point?" Wallace asked.

"Well, you know what I would say to that, Chris, is I think of all the people running, I've probably had the most experience making critical life and death decisions," Carson replied. "Probably far more 2 a.m. calls than anybody else. And I have a record of solving complex problems."

Carson added he's willing to let the voters decide whether is own skill set "is the right combination or maybe the right combination is somebody who has spent a lot of time talking about stuff."
